BSides, short for “Security BSides,” is a global network of community-driven cybersecurity conferences created by and for information security professionals, researchers, enthusiasts, and students. Founded in 2009 as an alternative to mainstream commercial conferences, BSides began as a grassroots initiative to create spaces where conversations that didn’t fit into traditional conference programs could still be shared. It has since grown into a global movement, with hundreds of independently organized events taking place across the world every year.
The first BSides events set the tone for what the brand would become: accessible, informal, deeply technical, and community-focused. Early gatherings in cities like London and Cape Town helped establish international momentum, showcasing how local cybersecurity communities could rally together to build inclusive, knowledge-sharing platforms. These events demonstrated that world-class infosec content didn’t need a high-priced ticket or corporate filter — just passionate people, a venue, and a shared commitment to learning and collaboration.
What sets BSides apart is its core ethos: it is organized by the community, for the community. Unlike large commercial conferences where vendors dominate the agenda, BSides maintains a firm separation between sponsorship and content. Sponsorship is welcomed — and essential — to support event logistics, but it does not influence the speaker lineup. Every talk is selected through a blind review process, where a volunteer CFP (Call for Papers) committee evaluates each submission solely on merit. This ensures that the talks chosen are high-quality, relevant, and vendor-neutral — a refreshing change from the pay-to-play model often seen elsewhere.
Over the years, BSides has had a profound impact on the global cybersecurity community. It has empowered new voices, provided a launchpad for first-time speakers, fostered local talent, and offered affordable, accessible education. Many well-known infosec professionals delivered their first public talk at a BSides event. Others return year after year to reconnect with peers, test out new ideas, or simply give back to the community that helped shape their careers.
Beyond the technical talks, BSides is also about community building. Events typically feature villages, workshops, capture the flag competitions, and informal networking opportunities. Attendees range from students and junior analysts to seasoned penetration testers, CISOs, and security researchers. This diverse mix of backgrounds and experience levels creates an environment that is welcoming, energizing, and focused on growth — both personal and professional.
Today, BSides events span continents, with gatherings in cities large and small — from Johannesburg to Tokyo, from Paris to Las Vegas. Each chapter is independently organized, reflecting the needs and culture of its local community, but all remain united under the shared BSides principles of openness, meritocracy, and grassroots collaboration.
BSides isn’t just a conference. It’s a movement. It’s a testament to what happens when passionate people take ownership of their industry and create something genuinely impactful. Whether you’re an old hand or just getting started in cybersecurity, BSides is a place to learn, connect, and contribute.
